Our Mission
Silver Lake Preparatory School is the product of educational psychology and extensive academic experience. It is based on the theory of multiple intelligences. The concept of teaching to multiple intelligences comes from the studies at Harvard University conducted by Professor Howard Gardner who inspired us with his fascinating research on the varied aspects of cognitive ability. Our philosophy is steeped in the belief that no two people learn the same; and therefore, teaching should always be flexible, positive and understanding of personal differences. We have just opened our doors here on Staten Island where we have begun our educational dialogue with the community.
Students learn best not by memorizing what is in their books but by exploring the implications of what they read. We hope to invigorate our students' minds by leading them along the path of inquiry, reflection, and creativity. We believe in positive feedback, so that when students encounter difficulties in their learning that they see these difficulties not as failures but as challenges they can overcome with proper guidance. There is an ancient Chinese symbol for catastrophe which is also used to mean opportunity. We wish to remove the pain from education and replace it with positive academic rigor in an environment filled with emotional intelligence and good judgment. One ingredient that has been missing in current times is the role of the parents in the educational process. Their role is invaluable in teaching the basic skills for living in society. We will be partnering with the wisdom of parents to complete the circle of learning from home to school to the community and back home again by making school a pro-social learning environment. We intend to inspire students to “want” to go to school.
